(EAST HARTFORD, CT) American Eagle Federal Credit Union has awarded $3,000 toward scholarships to 2009 East Hartford High School graduates Danielle Sailer and Afua Korankye in conjunction with the school’s Academy of Finance Program. The scholarships were presented at East Hartford High School’s Annual Award Breakfast on June 4, 2009.

In September, Danielle Sailer will attend Eastern Connecticut State University in Willimantic. She is the daughter of Charles and Debbie Sailer of East Hartford. Afua Korankye will attend the University of Connecticut in Storrs to study business management.  She is the daughter of Thomas and Paulina Korankye of East Hartford.

Sailer and Korankye are both graduates of the East Hartford High School Academy of Finance program. As part of this program, they were trained and hired as seasonal Member Account Representatives at the American Eagle FCU. Throughout the school year, they worked at the Credit Union’s branch at East Hartford High School. The in-school branch is open to students, teachers, and staff at the high school. Sailer and Korankye are continuing their employment at American Eagle FCU through the summer.
The East Hartford High School Academy of Finance program was established in 1982. According to Ralph Gray, business teacher at EHHS, “the Academy of Finance prepares students for post-secondary education and careers through a theme-based, contextualized curriculum approach. Academic learning experiences are combined with hands-on work experience to help students develop the thinking and problem-solving skills so critical to postsecondary education and career success.”
The Academy of Finance introduces high school students to the broad career opportunities of the financial services industry, opening the door to new options and equipping students to make sound choices for the future. One of three member programs of the National Academy Foundation, the Academy of Finance operates as a small learning community and is located in more than 260 high schools nationwide. Over 50 juniors and seniors were enrolled in the EHHS Academy of Finance program. For more information, visit www.easthartford.org.
