Eastern Connecticut Health Network’s (ECHN) Calendar of Community Lectures/Screenings for January-April

 

Below is a list of community lectures and screenings that are being offered to the community from January-April. Most of these lecture/screenings are free of charge. Tai Chi Chuan, Yang Style

A peaceful workout involving slow, fluid movements that leaves the mind in a calm, focused state. Licensed tai chi instructor Jim Shea, MEd, will cover traditional warm-ups, stretching, breathing exercises, stances and form.

Are You Thinking of Having Hip or Knee Replacement Surgery?

ECHN’s Joint Effort Program is a two-hour workshop for individuals scheduled to have total or partial hip or knee replacement surgery and for those thinking about having this type of surgery. ECHN orthopedic, nursing, care management and physical therapy staff will explain, step by step, the surgery day procedures, recovery care options, pain management and the rehabilitation process. Individuals who will be assisting a loved one’s recovery after surgery are encouraged to attend. Joint Effort, which is supported by The Auxiliary of Manchester Memorial Hospital, is conveniently held every month at two locations. Register today for one of the two-hour workshops:

SAD: Don’t Let The Winter Blues Get You Down

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), also known as winter blues, is a mood disorder that affects a person during the same season each year, typically winter. ECHN clinical psychologist Shannon Jackson, Psy.D., M.S.Ed., will discuss the causes of, symptoms of, and possible treatments for SAD.

Living With Asthma & Allergies

Cancer Screening and Prevention – Overview of the New ECHN Cancer Center

Getting screening tests regularly may find cancers early, when treatment is likely to work most effectively. Jeffrey S. Wasser, MD, Medical Director of ECHN’s Cancer Care Services, will present an overview of ECHN’s Cancer Care Services, the cutting-edge technology that will be available in the new facility, and other highlights. Cancer prevention strategies will also be covered.

Colon Cancer, A Preventable Epidemic

Colorectal cancer, in its early stages, is one of the most curable forms of cancer. Learn who and at what age testing should begin. Gain a better understanding of your risk factors for the disease. Prevention and treatment options will also be discussed. Presented by gastroenterologist James O’Brien, MD.

Diabetic Foot Screening

Diabetes can lead to many different types of foot complications, calluses, bunions and other foot deformities, or ulcers that can range from a surface wound to a deep infection. This screening is designed to screen patients who have been positively diagnosed with diabetes by a physician. It will include an evaluation of feet circulation, temperature and sensation in addition to checking toenails, calluses and any open sores, as well as education and recommendations for proper foot care. Podiatrist Donna Boccelli, DPM will perform the screening and Diabetes Self-Management Questions will also answered by Joan Schwartz, MS, RN, CDE.
